Taking a Break...

When you run your own company or sales territory, taking a break is very difficult. Sometimes it is merely of structuring your time so that there is time for yourself, family and friends, but I wonder if taking a break is ever really considered as part of that mix.  Taking breaks are very important for efficiency and sanity.  I don't think entrepreneurs do nearly enough of it though.

It is difficult for me to describe why. Perhaps it is a sense of responsibility or not letting down one's guard.  I once worked for a CEO that meticulously scheduled some time for us to share margaritas and discuss personal topics.  I think that was his way of taking a break and thinking about things that really matter.  Relating to his employees in a personal way and keeping a human element to his driven success.  I adored working for him and still feel a huge sense of loyalty to him, his company and his family.

When I'd travel on business, I'd often spend quality time with my clients or coworkers in a similar fashion.  Many of those relationships still continue years after the business relationship ended.  I deeply care about their personal well being, families and happiness.

Taking breaks has become vital for me during conferences.  I need a nap or just some quiet time in my hotel room between sessions or events.  It makes a huge difference in how well I can absorb information and listen to others.

When I take a break; I have a few favorite options:
  •     Taking a weekend cruise
  •     Going to Key West for a day or two
  •     Entertaining friends
  •     Spend a day or afternoon at a spa
  •     Visit friends out of town for a weekend
My friends from work added the following:
  •     Chris: having a nice walk and hanging out at Starbucks
  •     Andre: Meditate, Relax, Light Conversation
  •     Allia:  Read, Sleep, Dream, Share a good meal with friends
  •     Alexis: Lay down with some good music and a fan
